15 Similarities between Jon Snow and Harry Potter

As a fan of both the ‘Harry Potter‘ and the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire‘ (ASoIaF/Game of Thrones) series, it is obvious for me to draw comparisons between the two series. But I stumbled upon this one question on Quora, which asked “Are there similarities between Jon Snow and Harry Potter?” and it got me thinking real hard. In no time, I had thought of 16 such similarities (and counting) and wrote an answer about it then and there itself. I thought I would also share it with you.  You can also read the answer here.

Read on, ONLY if you have read both the Harry Potter series and the ‘ASoIaF’ series. Because SPOILERS are guaranteed to follow. Enjoy!

Boy, that is an interesting question!

Hmm, let’s see… *some spoilers*

  1. Harry and Jon both are the protagonists who started from nothing.
  2. Both were not part of their actual worlds. Harry didn’t even know that the Wizarding World existed while Jon (being told he was a bastard) was never part of the royal rituals.
  3. Both grew up without love. Harry was never loved by his aunt and uncle while Jon was purposely kept away from Ned. And Catelyn never loved him because he wasn’t hers.
  4. Harry and Jon both stand up for their friends and the weak. Harry always looks out for Neville and Luna while Jon always looks out for Sam. Harry never judges Ron for his under-confidence while Jon never calls Sam fat and weak!
  5. Both get super angsty. Harry in book 5. Jon throughout the series!
  6. Both look up to their father-figure type old mentors. Harry to Dumbledore and Jon to Commander Mormont/Maester Aemon (in a way…)
  7. Both respected their fathers. Harry was awed by James’s awesomeness. Jon always wanted to please his father Ned (for now… Later, it may be revealed that Rhaegar was his father, who is as cool as James!)
  8. Both had a Godfather-like figure in their lives. Harry had an awesome godfather Sirius Black. Jon had a badass uncle Benjen.
  9. Both have arch-nemesis. Harry has Draco. Jon has Ser Thorne (well, he has so many!).
  10. BOTH died and came back. Harry was nearly killed by Voldemort in Book7 and came back while Jon was stabbed by his Sworn Brothers of the Night’s Watch and is scheduled to come back on 24th of April, 2016. *wink, wink*
  11. Both have extremely loyal friends with big families. Jon has Sam Tarly and Harry has Ron Weasely.
  12. Both Harry and Jon have big secrets that they don’t know of till the end. Harry was a horcrux of Voldemort all along while Jon is the legitimate son of Rhaegar and Lyanna. (Again, this is not confirmed yet…)
  13. Both have dealt with deaths. Harry has seen the death of his godfather Sirius, his parents James and Lily, his friends Remus Lupin and Dora Tonks, Fred, Dobby, his mentor Dumbledore and his pet owl Hedwig. Jon has to cope up with the deaths of Ned, Catelyn (even though he wasn’t close to her), Robb, Commander Mormont, Maester Aemon, Bran and Rickon (because he doesn’t know they are alive, yet) and Ygritte.
  14. Both have strange hairstyles. Harry has jet black, spikey hair that never goes down and always stands up messily in every direction. Jon has great black curls.
  15. Both love red-heads. Jon loved Ygritte who had flaming red hair. You know who else had flaming red hair? Ginny, who Harry loved!

This is as far as I can remember. Will edit if I remember some more.

Top 5 TV Shows to Watch OFF SEASON

It is that time of the year when all the western shows are on a break and while all the good shows take a nap time, many of us sit idly thinking what to watch next. Whereas awesome shows like Game of Thrones, The Flash, The Walking Dead, House of Cards, The Big Bang Theory are taking a not-so-short break, other saviours have arisen. Here are some shows that are a definite watch. You can watch these shows in a binge, or individually one by one; it is up to you.

Number 5: Suits

Status: Season 5 ongoing

Category: Legal, Drama

Suits is an American legal drama television series created and written by Aaron Korsh. It is funny in a DAMN SERIOUS sort of way and has a lot going on. While the premise of the show is based on daily Lawsuits and the workings of a prestigious law firm-based lawyer, it is easy to understand and a delight to watch.

Even though you might not understand many of the ‘legal’ terms used in the show, the palpable tension between Mike and Rachel, the charm and suaveness of Harvey Specter and the ‘dickiness’ of Louis Litt is worth a watch. Also, it airs in the Summer (i.e. June onwards) and has completed four seasons (ongoing fifth season) so you have plenty to watch.

Number 4: 12 Monkeys

Status: Season 1 completed; on a break

Category: Science Fiction, Mystery

12 Monkeys is an American television series on Syfy created by Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett. It is based on the movie of the same name. It follows a Time traveler James Cole who travels from the year 2043 to the present day to stop the release of a deadly virus by the enigmatic organization known as “The Army of the Twelve Monkeys”. Sounds cool right?

It is well directed according to me and drips with urgency from the post apocalypse. It involves realism, simple time travelling mechanics and a gripping story. The mystery element simply adds to the punch.

This show is definitely a must watch. Preferably, one should BINGE WATCH this one.

Number 3: Coupling

Status: Completed

Category: Sitcom, British Comedy

Coupling is a British television sitcom written by Steven Moffat that aired on BBC2 from 12 May 2000 to 14 June 2004. Yes, it is that old.

On the first glance, it might seem to be a British copy of FRIENDS but it is anything but. A little more adultish, it is made by the same guy who made Sherlock and is currently helming Doctor Who.

It lasted 4 seasons and involves a group of six friends (three guys and three girls) and how each gender interprets a situation differently. A complex storyline is embedded into each episode and it is just perfect to look at the relationships portrayed in this show!

Number 2: Arrow

Status: Season 3 completed; on a break

Category: Superhero, Drama, Mystery, Action, Science Fiction, Fantasy

If you have heard about The Flash, its predecessor is Arrow. Arrow is an American television series developed by writer/producers Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and Andrew Kreisberg. It is based on the DC Comics character Green Arrow, a costumed crime-fighter created by Mort Weisinger and George Papp.

It centres around Arrow (before he became the Green Arrow superhero) who, with the help of his companions Diggle and Felicity (and more!), stop evil goings in Starling City.
If you read the Category section, you will see how many types of elements there are in this show. Superhero fan? CHECK! Drama needed? CHECK! Like Mystery and action? CHECK!

THE BEST part about this show is that it always ends on a cliffhanger and is also the best at knitting complex storylines that come together in the final episode in a perfect arc.

Although majorly science fiction, the recent episodes have delved lightly into the fantasy realms too.

Number 1: How to Get Away With Murder

Status: Season 1 completed; on a break

Category: Legal Drama, Mystery, Romance, Thriller

How to Get Away with Murder (HTGAWM) is an American television series that premiered on ABC on September 25, 2014. The series was created by Peter Nowalk, produced by Shonda Rhimes and distributed by ABC Studios. Viola Davis* stars as a law professor at a prestigious Philadelphia university who, with five of her students, becomes entwined in a murder plot.

Okay, just watch the pilot episode. Just…listen to me. It has so much of mystery, so much of thriller, A WHOLE LOT OF ASS-KICKERY! Actors are fantastic, the drama is not your usual boring drama, the story is exquisitely handled, the direction is one of the best, and the music used complements every situation perfectly…

This show is one of my FAVOURITE shows ever! Murder, mystery and thriller are a perfect combination and every show ends on a cliffhanger, just like with Arrow.

Caution: Sexual Nudity shown openly so watch it with care.

Hello Bleedsters!
This is a list of my favourite shows that I watch when all the major shows have ended. While some of these shows are known to the masses, others are not so well known, hence the inclusion in this list. I have added those shows that are either perfect to binge on, or are perfect to watch from anywhere and elsewhere. If that made sense. I love story, acting and complexity so I have chosen those shows.
As always, this is my personal opinion so if yours differs from mine, please comment down YOUR list. We will see whose is better 😉
The part 2 post is still in works. If anyone cares, it will be up soon, Sorry for the delay!
Love,
Kunal.

*Viola Davis rocks and she is one of my favourite television actresses. You might have heard of her recent casting as ‘Amanda Waller’ in the upcoming movie Suicide Squad.

Top 5 Mid-range Android Smartphones (less than Rs 20K)

Copyright Kunal Nayak

Note:
The following list is made of personal opinions and research at the time of upload. The info might vary as time moves on and the links may change too. This review is for those who cannot afford fancy phones and do not care about technical features as much as the Flagship owners do. If you use your phone for music, light gaming, awkward selfies, shabby assignment/homework pics and casual browsing (Facebook, Youtube etc.) then this list is for you. Enjoy! Also,
Currency in Rupees…

How many of you can’t afford a Flagship Rs 30k or 40k Smartphone from Samsung or LG or such?

I can feel three-fourths of you raising your hands. The rest all must be rich or desperate, because my personal opinion is that anything above 20k for a phone is too much. BUT GUESS WHAT? Of course there is a shortage of a good budget smartphone  at the price range of 20k! Or is there?

The smartphones listed below are all stuffed with maximum features and I have done my best to capture only those that a simple middle-classer like me can afford. Maximum budget is Rs 20,000 (if I have not mentioned it enough times :D).

But before we begin, please note that the following typical smartphones have NOT been included: Moto G, Nokia/Microsoft Lumia series of phones, Blackberry etc. I want to list some phones that are not popular to the masses much or those which people won’t normally consider, but should. So here goes the list, starting with…:

Number 5) Xiaomi Mi4i

This phone is uprooting all kinds of trees and creating all kinds of storms in the Smartphone Market. It is cheap, easily available, built with high quality and is packed with all kinds of features!

Basic Specs: 5.0″ IPS FHD (1080 p) Corning Gorilla Glass protected Touchscreen with 441 ppi pixel density, Qualcomm Snapdragon 615, 2GB RAM, 16GB Non-expandable Inbuilt Memory, 13MP back and 5MP front cameras, 3120mAH non-removable Battery and Android Lollipop (MIUI v6)

Detailed Specs: GSM Arena

Cost: Rs. 12,999 (BUY : Flipkart)

Pros:

1) Beautiful Design, superior build quality, slim and feather-light.
2) Huge Battery of 3120mAH which is more than enough for a whole day (and then some).
3) Camera is good for average usage (like pics of assignments and homework etc but for scenery of DSLR quality? NAH…)
4) Sound Quality is not bad. Its clear enough for daily, normal usage.
5) 2GB RAM and latest mid-range Snapdragon processor is perfect for light gamers and medium heavy taskers.

Cons:

1) Some have reported heating issues with the device, when used extensively.
2) MIUI v6.0. Some people like it, some people like the stock android feel. I personally prefer stock android UI. Also, no app drawer.

Number 4) HTC Desire 816G (Dual Sim, 16GB)

I don’t usually prefer HTC phones for reasons unknown even to me but this particular phone seems the best choice for the HTC lovers and people who don’t have lots of money! You should definitely look at this one, if you want a phone whose priority is sound and specs!

Basic Specs: 5.5″ IPS HD (720 p) Touchscreen with 267 ppi pixel density, 1.7GHz Octa-core CPU, 1GB RAM, 16GB Inbuilt Memory (expandable up to 32GB), 13MP back and 5MP front cameras, 2600mAH non-removable Battery, Dual Sim and Android Lollipop

Detailed Specs: HTC website

Cost: Rs. 19,500 (BUY : Amazon)  //Yes,  a bit costly, but the brand is well-known and the speaker are good so…//

Pros:

1) Beautiful Design, superior build quality, slim and feather-light.
2) Camera is good .
3) Superior front-facing speakers.
4) Very good processor and performance.
5) Price of below 20k for an HTC phone.

Cons:

1) 1GB RAM is not enough, sometimes.
2) The 720p screen, though good, is not that great for modern times. It needs a 1080p screen.

Number 3) Asus Zenphone 2 (4GB RAM)

Asus Zenphone 2 is downright fast. There is no other word that defines this monster! Nearly everyone who uses Flipkart and follows any kind of tech channel on Youtube must be knowing this device. But if you don’t, you should definitely give this one a look.

Basic Specs: 5.5″ IPS FHD (10800 p) Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protected Touchscreen with 403 ppi pixel density, Intel Atom 2.3GHz CPU, 4GB RAM, 32GB Inbuilt Memory (expandable up to 32GB), 13MP back and 5MP front cameras, 3000mAH non-removable Battery, Dual Sim and Android Lollipop

Detailed Specs: GSM Arena

Cost: Rs. 19,999 (BUY : Flipkart)

Pros:

1) Super fast. Whopping 4GB RAM is enough to do anything that can be done on an Android phone!
2) Good Battery.
3) Screen clarity is superb.
4) Very good processor and performance.

Cons:

1) Heats up a lot. Future update to remove this problem is expected, though.
2) The power button is on top and the screen is too large so it is difficult to reach it.

Number 2) Oneplus One (16GB)

If you haven’t heard about this phone, I feel sorry for you. It is called the Flagship Killer because of its high specs and cheap price and it lives up to the hype and expectations. Number 2 only because of the special phone I have placed on Number 1. It, I feel, ties with the Number 1 option.

Basic Specs: 5.5″ IPS FHD (10800 p) Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protected Touchscreen with 401 ppi pixel density, Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 CPU, 3GB RAM, 16GB Inbuilt Memory (non-expandable), 13MP back and 5MP front cameras, 3100mAH non-removable Battery and Android Lollipop (CyanogenMod 12)

Detailed Specs: GSM Arena

Cost: Rs. 18,998 (BUY : Amazon)   //64GB model available, but it costs more than 20k//

Pros:

1) Super fast. Whopping 3GB RAM is enough to do anything!
2) Good Battery.
3) Screen clarity is superb.
4) Very good processor and performance.
5) CyanogenMod is awesome
6) Superb build quality.

Cons:

1) Heats up a lot. Like, a lot. Even after a year of updates!
2) Production fluctuates. Availability is low (even after the removal of update system).

Number 1) Huawei Honor 6

Huawei is a good company, and the Honor series is one of the best of them. I placed this on number 1 spot instead of Oneplus One(OPO) because this device is largely unheard while OPO is becoming too common. It is tying with OPO however since I have used Huawei Honor 6 personally (my dad has it), I know that I love this phone more. However it is a personal opinion.

Basic Specs: 5.0″ IPS FHD (1080 p) Touchscreen with 445 ppi pixel density, Quad-core 1.7 GHz Cortex-A15 CPU, 3GB RAM, 16GB Inbuilt Memory (expandable upto 64GB), 13MP back and 5MP front cameras, 3100mAH non-removable Battery and Android Kitkat (Emotion UI)

Detailed Specs: GSM Arena

Cost: Rs. 16,999 (BUY : Flipkart)

Pros:

1) Super fast. Whopping 3GB RAM is enough to do anything!
2) Good Battery.
3) Screen clarity is superb.
4) Very good processor and performance.
5) Cheaper than OPO, but similar features.
6) Superb build quality.

Cons:

1) Screen protection is poor.
2) Placement of speakers on the bottom is poor. Hence, songs can’t be heard when you keep the phone down.
3) Emotion UI is a custom skin (just like MIUI) and some people prefer stock android.

If you have any other opinions, please write them down in the comment below. This is my list, so all the choices are calculated and researched by me to the best of my knowledge. They may change from time to time so please take that down in your little Criticism notebook! 😛
